-E welo mau ana ka hae Hawaiʻi-As part of our Piko ʻOnipaʻa assembly on January 15, Kula Haʻahaʻa also dedicated our new flag pole where our beautiful hae Hawaiʻi will fly. At the assembly, we honored current KSK junior Chardez Naone and former Director of Operations Alison Leary for their efforts and dedication to this cause.
Seven years ago, Chardez was a 5th grader at Kula Haʻahaʻa and realized that when flown on the same pole, the hae Hawaiʻi was required by law to be positioned under the American flag. She conducted research and discovered that by erecting another pole, the hae Hawaiʻi could fly at the same level as the American flag and thus not subjugating our hae. Chardez wrote a letter to the principal, which was then brought to Alison Leary, who championed the initiative. The flag pole was finally erected this year.
During the assembly, Chardez delivered an inspiring speech to current Kula Haʻahaʻa haumāna, emphasizing the power of their voices and their ability to be change agents. The dedication concluded with a touching moment as Chardez received the hae Hawaiʻi from her former 5th grade kumu, Cady Uyeoka, and hoisted it up the flag pole. The celebration continued as everyone sang Hawaiʻi Ponoʻī, followed by kumu and haumāna performing hula to the song Eō E Ka Lāhui.
This event not only marks a milestone for our school but also serves as a reminder that he mana kō ka ʻōlelo, there is mana in our voices.#imuakamehameha #haeHawaiʻi #maunōkonaweloʻana #eola #'ōiwileaders
